Statement from David Cunliffe I am today announcing that I have decided not to nominate for the 2014 Labour Party leadership contest. It has been a hard decision to make but it is one that I believe is in the best interests of the wider Labour Party.

Today at 14:00 hours David Cunliffe Former Leader of the Labour Party withdrew from the labour party leadership election.

New Zealand will be the lesser for it – the 2014 NZ elections has been turned into a media circus and it is not over yet.

The indecision of the Members of the Caucus of the Labour Party has forced this turn of events and will continue to do so unless a strong and forthright leader is elected and Labour forced to turn around take off the make up and become what it is “the Labour Party.”

It is simple really the average ‘joe blow’ doesn’t recognise the Labour Party.

Leaders are not leaders if they continue to procrastinate and wait for opinion polls.

Don’t listen to what others have to say. They don’t have to bear the personal costs that you will.

Personally would have preferred to see Cunliffe remain but that is not to be – at this time. Too many alpha dogs in this race- have and will continue to bog the party down.

It started with glory and ended in tragedy. The Japanese galloper, who had been placed at a Japan Cup prior to coming to Australia, took the carnival by storm and was made favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

But after being placed near the front for much of the race, the Tomoyuki Umeda-trained horse pulled up in the straight to finish last. Then as it returned from the course after the race, Admire Rakti collapsed in the stalls and despite attempts to revive him, the horse died at the track to cast a pall over Cup day.

Admire Rakti and Araldo

More than one nation mourned the deaths of the two horses admire rakti and araldo after they died at the Melbourne cup.

Admire Rakti died in his stable after the race distressed suspected heart attack. He was the Caulfield Cup winner and pre favourite for the Melbourne Cup.

Owner of Admire Rakti Japan Mr Kondo, trainer Mr Umeda and his staff who cared deeply for their horse were sad at their tragic loss

The trainer of Araldo Mike Moroney’s racing stable has called for stricter crowd controls following the death of his Melbourne Cup runner, Araldo.

The stallion was injured in a freak accident but what the Moroney stable believes should have been an avoidable incident at Flemington.

The stayer, who was purchased from Germany for $500,000, was spooked by a person waving a large Australian flag when Araldo was returning to the mounting yard after finishing seventh.

He lashed out and shattered his off-side pastern bone in his hind leg when he became stuck in a small fence of the rose garden. He kicked his way out of it but irreparably damaged his leg.

Araldo was transported to Werribee Veterinary Hospital where surgeons were forced to euthanise the horse after scans showed the fracture was inoperable.

These are very expensive and valuable horses.

Animal lovers racing fans and the industry are calling for bans on animals that are forced to perform to their utmost.

What kind of people are we who would support such endeavours.

So perhaps the world has gone crazy and everyone considers themselves experts at horse racing. We don’t believe that for a minute.

For many kiwi kids some of us have had family who have been into horse training and the processes are not so unusual. The breeding raising and training of good horses is set within a regime of good animal & farming practices.

Part of the pre-selection of horses for these prestigious races should be based on credible and sustainable performance data as it usually is. Maybe they need vetting controls pre race.

Who knows -but it is very sad to hear of horses dying after performing so much in a once in a lifetime opportunity ‘The Melbourne Cup”.

We would even go so far as to say it altered the outcome of the Race.
